518sian is an all-volunteer, Asian-led initiative which both brings together and celebrates the Asian American community in the Capital Region.

We launched AAPI Heritage Month 518 in May 2024 to build community, understanding, and inclusion though events held during the month of May.

To get involved or for more information, contact: 518sian@gmail.com

Special thanks to our friends in Cincinnati and Memphis for inspiring us to create AAPI Heritage Month 518 in upstate New York.

Guiding Principles and Values

1.

DIVERSITY

The AAPI/AANHPI experience is rich and diverse, including mult-racial and multi-heritage individuals and families, and our committee does not claim to represent each and every person who identifies as Asian American.  We have dynamic overlapping identities based on color, class, sexual orientation, immigration status, religion, age, ability and gender.

2.

EMPOWERMENT

This group is led and owned by the people we represent. Our purpose is to highlight Asian American people, voices, contributions, and stories through our own means.

3.

REJECTING HARMFUL NARRATIVES

We reject any notions of being a “model minority” and false narratives that aim to separate Asian Americans as foreigners or good, hard-working immigrants who deserve to be here. We don’t need to prove nor earn our place in society, and neither do other immigrants or people of color.

4.

SOLIDARITY

We are allies with other marginalized groups experiencing racism, hatred, and intolerance.
